Tammy On Tuesday – “Quality Control”

With Christmas upon us, I have been thinking about my usual approach to Christmas shopping for those on my list.  I am a “type A” kind a girl and so I am always over thinking what I should get for each person.  It’s like everything in the universe depends on me making the right choice for them…the perfect gift.

I know I’m confessing here and I hate to admit it, but there’s more.   When I’m pulling something off the shelf at a store…I usually bypass the first several items and go for one in the back…one that’s been untouched – to ensure I’m getting the best possible version of that product.  I think to myself, People handle the items at the front…no reason I should take any chances on something being messed up…I’ll just go for the back.  Okay, now, some of you must admit you do the same!  I call it “Quality Control”.

Have you ever taken an item to the register and found a hole or snag so you went back to get another?  No one wants to purchase something sub-par when they have the option to have the item without any flaws.

Think about all of the retailers and the companies that make the items we buy.  Ideally, they want us to buy their products, so they put forth their very best.  I imagine a “quality control” conveyor belt.   I wonder what it must be like to have that type of job.  You stand there looking for something that seems out of sorts, anything that doesn’t represent the company’s standards, and you pull it from the belt.  End of story.

God began to speak to my heart about the care I took in purchases.  I put so much emphasis on quality control.  But, there was a much more important area in my life that needed Quality Control – My thought life.

When it comes to the millions of thoughts that overwhelm my mind each day, sometimes I’ll let just any ole junk in.  Then I suffer from feeling defeated, discouraged, disillusioned, guilty, worried.  You name it.

The other day I began to imagine how much better my outlook would be if I refused to allow the wrong thoughts to enter my mind.  Just toss them off the belt.  Practice Quality Control.

I am reminded the verse,  Philippians 4:8.  It says,

“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

What are you thinking about today?  Have you allowed junk to fill your mind?  Maybe it’s time for you do some quality control?

I’ve decided to be more proactive in establishing a healthy thought life.

As described in Philippians I want to think on things that are…

  • true (Have I been believing lies?)
  • honorable (Are my thoughts pleasing to God?)
  • right (Have I been banking on only half the story?)
  • pure (Am I thinking the proper thoughts about those around me?)
  • lovely (Have I been counting my blessings?)
  • admirable (Am I thinking of ways to make a difference?)
  • excellent and praise worthy (Am I putting others before myself?)

Once I began to discard the negative thoughts in my mind, I was able turn my attention to thoughts that bring life, joy, hope and peace.  Now that’s a great gift to give your self this time of year!

As you go throughout this day, be aware of the thoughts coming down the conveyor belt of your mind.  It may be time for some Quality Control!

My Cup of Tea

This time of year, I love to wear scarves!  I wear them often.  I love tons of colors and I find that they offer a pop of color to an otherwise boring outfit.  When it comes to scarves, I try not to get too matchy-matchy. I just pick a color that I like and around my neck it goes. Over the years I’ve acquired quite a collection.  Since the weather outside is frightful (kinda), I am giving one of my scarves away.  Just comment on today’s blog to be entered to win.

And the winner is…  Joanie Fauth, chosen by random generator.  Congratulations.  Please contact us with your mailing information.  I’ll get your scarf right out to you!

December 6, 2011 - 7:50 am

Candie Baldridge - Funny you brought the thought thing up. I find I have (for the lack of a better phrase), stinkin thinkin. It is amazing how it just pops in my head without warning and before I know it, I’ve been entertaining the thought when I should have just thrown it to the side. Thank you for mentioning that scripture and breaking it down. It’s just what I needed.

As far as the scarves. I LOVE how they look but when I go to the store to buy one, I can never make a decision. I was given a scarf and it’s beautiful but another thing is, I never know the little ways in which to tie/wear it. I know it sounds silly to be overwhelmed by a peice of yarn or cloth but….I’m admitting it…LOL

December 6, 2011 - 7:57 am

Barbara Harrington - Tammy You are so right on it this morning:) I also need to take a look at my conveyor belt Thank you for your words today :) God Bless you and your family

December 6, 2011 - 8:12 am

Sue Sweeney - Hi Tammy! Yes,
I find that if my thoughts start to go downhill, I just pray and ask the Lord to cleanse my mind. So often, when your mind gets on the wrong “train” of thought, it’s not long and before it can get out of control. Satan loves to play on your mind. Thanks for that scripture – reminding us on what thoughts to think on. Love you and your weekly encouragements and insights.

December 6, 2011 - 8:15 am

Laurie Sadler - Wow!!! Talk about food for thought (no pun intended). Sometimes my conveyor belt starts running too fast and I have to slow it down. I not only find myself thinking on the wrong things but having so many thoughts at once that I can’t hear God. Sometimes I have to completely stop that conveyor belt and do what it says in Ps. 46:10 Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

December 6, 2011 - 8:20 am

Sheri - I think this might have been for me this morning. I couldn’t sleep last night because of all the “junk” that was in my mind!

December 6, 2011 - 8:58 am

Kelley Murphy - Hi, Tammy,

Thank you for this word. This time of year is so hectic and it’s so easy to become distracted and lose our focus. Needed this reminder today keep my mind protected! Hope you and your beautiful family have a very Merry Christmas!

December 6, 2011 - 9:25 am

April McCabe - I look forward to reading your blog each week to see what GOD has in store for me to “hear”…it’s amazing how each thing you have talked about so far I am dealing with or have just gone through. Still learning! Thanks for being an open vessel! Love you guys!

December 6, 2011 - 11:18 am

Dawn Wolf - Tammy, what a great check up for our thoughts. I love that scripture.
Love the scarves!!

December 6, 2011 - 12:22 pm

Mark Lashey - :)

December 6, 2011 - 12:36 pm

Todd Nelson - Great “Tammy on Tuesday” now that’s a scripture we all need to practice!!
Can I have one of Marks scarfs!

December 6, 2011 - 1:03 pm

Joanie Fauth - I have been striving lately to have pure thoughts. So often, I look fine on the outside, but in my mind there is a war going on. Thank you for sharing this!

December 6, 2011 - 1:38 pm

Cheryl Newmarker-Lloyd - This is the first time I’ve read your “Tammy On Tuesday”. It brought a smile to my face, as it sounded so much like my inner voice, lol. I LOVE THAT VERSE! Controlling our thoughts is VERY important, 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV) “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” Our inner voice has A HUGE influence on our lives.

December 6, 2011 - 3:07 pm

Jenny Pyryt - This one was just what I have been needing lately. The verse really spoke to me. I read it a few times to let it really sink in.

December 6, 2011 - 3:13 pm

Beth Perez - Much needed! Thanks, Tammy! And I love scarves too!

December 6, 2011 - 11:11 pm

Pamala McMorrow - I love reading your blogs and I also love scarves. I also wanted to let you know that I found jeggings at Walmart in black and navy for only 12.88, AND they are just as nice as the pricier ones at the more expensive stores. Check them out. God Bless.

December 7, 2011 - 3:44 pm

Jennie Mason - Thanks, Tammy, for your insightfulness – we should all strive to think thoughts that are excellent and worthy of praise. Have a blessed day!

Tammy On Tuesday – The “other” Box

Black Friday…It’s named for the hope that retailers will end the year in the black instead of the red on their record books.  Yet, the name seems all the more fitting to describe the mood and behavior of so many who shopped on Black Friday. There have been lots of stories in the news about Black Friday altercations.  No doubt tensions were high and I guess I witnessed it first hand.   I ventured out on Black Friday against my better judgment and happened upon an angry mother with two young children.  She was giving a Starbucks employee a piece of her mind for not pouring enough coffee in her cup.  She got so worked up she demanded to see the manager.    The employee behind the counter looked tired and frazzled and it seemed this complaint was about to do her in.

I began to get a little angry myself, at this ridiculous display.  In my mind I was thinking of how I would step in and take care of the situation.  I began running through options in my head:

A.  I would go over and tell the lady she was being ridiculous and making a fool of herself in front of her kids.  (I believe the others waiting would have deemed me the hero of the day and applauded my efforts since, by the look on everyone’s face, we all seemed to feel the same way about this lady.)

B.  I would go over and ignore the lady and talk directly to the frazzled employee.  I’d stand there and tell her although her day had been long and probably thankless, I appreciated her hard work.

Or… I could go to the third option…This option is the one I call “other”.  It’s the option listed just after all of my options have been exhausted.

It’s like when you are filling out a form and A or B don’t fit so there is an “other” option.

(Notice I didn’t say “c” because in situations where the word “other” is used, it is to describe something all together different from what’s stated in “a” and “b”. )

What I’ve learned is that God works in “other”.

When faced with everyday situations, I usually have a couple of ways I think I should handle a situation and then there’s God’s way.  It usually is quite different from what seems the obvious choice to me.

Let me give you an example. Several years ago my daughter, Abby, was being bullied at school.  When I heard about it, my blood pressure began to rise (call it a passion for justice) and I began to think of ways I would HANDLE the situation.  I would don my cape and TCB  – that means Take Care of Business.  I began to work through my options in my mind:

A. I would give this bully the evil eye when I saw her that would let her know I was on to her.

B. I would track down her parents and ask if they were aware that their girl is being hateful to others and offer them a book on parenting.

C. I would give Abby some good comebacks to really put this girl in her place next time she began bullying her.

Once I’d exhausted my ideas I was left with the option of  “other”.

I prayed and said, “God, I know you tell us not to seek vengeance.  I’m sure you also know that I don’t want to see Abby bullied in school.  If you don’t think any of my options are the best way to solve the situation…then I guess I want to hear yours.  What is it?”

His answer was a big resounding “OTHER” as I mentally saw it being checked in the box.

Guess what He said?

Love her.

“Love her – this hoodlum child?  Love her?  God, I don’t even often see her.  How could I possibly show love to this girl?”  Why would I ever do something like that?!?!”

Have a sleepover.

“Oh, God, that will never work. I would have to talk with her mom and I rarely see her mom at pick-up time.  What if her mother is as mean as she is?  Besides, what if Abby doesn’t like that idea!”

Silence.
“Okay, Lord, if you want her to come for a sleepover, there are some things to be worked out…

  • Her mom will need to be there the same time I am at pick-up.
  • Abby will have to be okay with this idea.

I left my concerns with God and moved forward that day with my plan.

Now, I’m not making this up.  When I approached the school door for pick-up I was shocked to find the bully’s mom right in front of me.  Before I could speak a word to her we both looked and saw the girls walking out together.   (Here’s where it gets really crazy.)  Abby pipes up and says,  “Mom, we had a talk today and we decided to be friends, can we have a sleepover?!?!

Cue Tammy…It was my turn to speak.  At first, I was tongue-tied, but I finally found my voice and said, “Well, since you mentioned it…” I turned to the girl’s mom and asked if it’d be okay for her daughter to sleep over.

She was a guest in our home that Friday night.   While she was over, we talked to her, showed interest in her and, for lack of a better word…just “loved” on her.  And guess what, Abby hasn’t been bullied since.

I know it’s a crazy story and this type of thing doesn’t happen everyday. The point I want to make is this.  As you are faced with frustrating situations and frustrating people this Christmas season, know that you can always choose the option “other”.   But remember, God’s option always involves love and loving others is not always our first choice.

It’s easy to say, “Let’s love each other.”  Especially when things are going our way.  But today’s blog is food for thought.  The next time you find your feathers ruffled, (long lines, heavy traffic, rude people, change of plans), as you’re thinking of how you will “handle” the situation…consider “other”.

Thinking back to the incident at Starbucks, I actually don’t know how things turned out.  While they were waiting on the manager, I was already heading out the door and on to my next “thing.”   I got into my car with “options” still running through my head.  As I thought, a still small voice said, “You could have tried love.”  It’s true.  I’ll never know what good it could’ve done.  But Love always “does good”.  Imagine the difference if we all would choose the option… “other”.

 My Cup of Tea

Today I want to share with you something I’ve used quite a bit lately.  Dry shampoo.  You know how you have those days where you don’t want to wash your hair but you are afraid of how it might look at the end of the day?  No body wants dirty looking hair.  Dry shampoo has actually given me a day of rest with hair washing.  It’s great!  I apply it right to the root of my hair mostly at my crown, temple and nape of the neck.  I let it dry for about 15-30 seconds and then comb through.  Another great use for dry shampoo is for body and lift.  There are many types of dry shampoo on the market and I’ve tried several.  I noticed that TreSemme’ does as good a job as any and it’s the least expensive I have found.  Those of you who comment on today’s blog will be entered into a drawing for your own TreSemme’ Dry Shampoo.

And the winner is…Kathy Matheny!!!  Chosen by random generator.  Kathy, please contact us with your mailing information and we’ll get your dry shampoo right out to you!

November 29, 2011 - 8:06 am

Sue Sweeney - Hi Tammy, I am loving your “food for thought” in these blogs. When I think about today’s blog I think of a quote my father used to tell me when I was bullied in school. “The best way to get rid of an enemy is make them your friend.” People are thrown back when you are kind to them when they are nasty to you. It’s hard to do – but with God all things are possible. Thanks for sharing – love you!

November 29, 2011 - 9:27 am

Lisa Kerns - Such a good reminder, I too want to “handle it”…trying hard to hear that still small voice more and more. Thanks for the encouraging words! I sometimes use baby powder…dry shampoo is definitely that better option!! I hope I win!!:)again…

November 29, 2011 - 9:34 am

Dawn Wolf - Tammy, that is so true. I see people in stores and parking lots acting crazy, I take a deep breath, thank God he’s with me and I give them grace. If I don’t, I find myself starting to get frustrated too. I’ve never tried the dry shampoo I’ve been scared of it, but definitely worth giving it a try. Thanks

November 29, 2011 - 9:43 am

Kathy Matheny - I have such long, thick hair and blow drying it everyday is so time consuming. I’ve always wondered about the Dry Shampoos, thank you for testing and recommending! Love your advice, words of wisdom and your photographs!

November 29, 2011 - 10:22 am

Candie Baldridge - I’ve had the same thing happen to my daughter…many times! It is common for kids on the Autism spectrum to be bullied in school because they are different. I, just like you, just wanted to go in there and take care of business and have talked to her teachers about the problem. I kept saying in my head that I have to be her advocate…it’s my job to speak up for her. Then as she got older I tried to help her understand why people do what they do and tried giving her some good comebacks…I just wanted her to know how to “stick up” for herself. Truth is…none of these have worked completely and now I wish I could have said I went to the Lord about the situation. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. Every day I’m on this earth the Lord finds ways of speaking to me….either through His word or through others….today it was through you. Thank you for sharing.

November 29, 2011 - 12:36 pm

Dawn Miller - Thanks Tammy…once again – great food for thought! As a teacher, I always appreciate the parents that teach their kids to respond with love. It is so difficult when a parent teaches to fight back because then the cycle is never broken – and how do you tell a kid to NOT obey their parents when they say,”well, my mom told me to hit them back!” But your thoughts this morning really helped me to focus on myself – how many times have I “practiced what I preach”? How many times can I show love instead of using the other options I think are valid? Thanks a bunch!

November 29, 2011 - 1:12 pm

Kim Hecksher - What an incredible story with Abby & her friend- by choosing ” other” you were far more prepared for it to all fall together. That’s good- thanks for sharing! Also- will have to try the dry shampoo myself to see if they work just as well on curly hair! xxoo

November 29, 2011 - 1:49 pm

Jennie Mason - Jennie Mason – Hi Tammy – we loved having you at our church last Sunday, and especially loved hearing your children sing! Today’s blog reminded me of what my Nana used to tell me – Honey, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar! In other words, always be kind and polite, and it doesn’t hurt to quote a favorite scripture to yourself, too…thanks for sharing!

November 29, 2011 - 3:29 pm

Barbara Harrington - Hi Tammy Thank You for the food for thought today so many times we need to be reminded of “other” If we try to take matters into our own hands it never works With God’s help all things are possible”) Have a great evening and Thanks again

Tammy On Tuesday – There’s No Place Like Home!

I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. (Eph 3:16-17) NLT

This weekend our family music ministry, Calling Levi, sang in Florida.  We left home Friday night at six, arrived in Florida on Saturday afternoon, set up, sang Sunday morning, left for home and arrived back on Monday morning at 8:00 am.  Talk about a crazy trip!

For over 20 years now I have traveled in music ministry in some form. (That would mean I started when I was three. Ha!) In fact, at home, I keep my toiletry bag packed at all times.  I’m ashamed to say that the suitcase I used for our summer tour is still sitting neatly in the corner on my bedroom floor filled with summer clothes.

Through the years I have stayed in countless host homes and hotels. It would be interesting to me to know how many.  All of this traveling affords us plenty of opportunities for hilarious stories we will someday share with our grandkids (many, many years from now)!  I have quite a few stories of host home experiences gone awry: awkward conversations, uncomfortable rollaway beds, dead squirrel in the closet.  I’m not making this stuff up!!!

That’s why the phrase “there’s no place like home” is all the more special to me.  I have done my best to make our home a haven for Mark and I and the kids. It has my signature on the decor and design. From paint colors, to wall art, to candle scents, my home speaks of who I am.  It’s a reflection of me in every way.

As much as someone might want to make me feel at home when I travel, it’s never like being at home. Their homes are just not like mine. When I walk into someone else’s home, I stand in the entry way and ask them where they’d like me to put my bags, I then wait for them to tell me what we’ll do next. I follow their cue in everything until it’s my time to leave.

God spoke to me during our trip this weekend through a passage in the Bible,

Ephesians 3:16-17 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. (NLT)

Have I simply allowed Christ into my heart and life to stand at the door and await my cue?   Does he feel like a visitor?  This passage says to let him make my heart and life HIS home – His paint colors, His wall art, His candles, His signature.  I think you get the point.  If you’ve invited Christ into your life, into your heart, how do you treat His presence there?  Have you given him the “run of the house” or are you treating Him like a guest?  There’s a big difference.

I’ve been challenged by this illustration to allow Christ to “make His home” in me.  So that when people see me, they see His signature. His design.  How do we allow Christ to make our hearts His home?

  • Get rid of the junk.  (You know – that stuff that’s hidden in the closets.  Things you don’t want to tackle.  Stuff you don’t want others to see. It’s gotta go.)
  • Expect major renovations.  If my heart is to become His home, He will probably begin by tearing down walls, and restructuring the space as He sees fit.
  • Remember to trust the Architect.  His resources are boundless.  He never skimps.  He only adorns our hearts and lives with the finest of blessings and goodness.  And He requires nothing from us but the willingness to let Him work.  The Bibles verse says He will make His home in your hearts AS YOU TRUST HIM.”

I can honestly say my heart is a work in progress.  The only time the construction slows is when I get in the way.  But I’ll tell you something…what I have found is this – When Christ is Lord, there’s no place like home!

MY CUP OF TEA -

I love coffee and I drink a bunch of it.  My husband, Mark, and I finish a pot each morning and are left wanting.  Okay, so I’m sure there’s plenty to say about too much coffee.  But it’s the truth in my home. We love coffee.  So, in the afternoon when the coffee pot is already in the dishwasher, I can still have a cup of coffee if I like.  My friend, Tara, turned me on to Starbucks  instant coffee.  And it’s actually great for being instant!  I don’t treat myself to it every day.  I just enjoy a cup when I’ve been in front of the computer too long or need a pick-me-up.  Those of you who comment on today’s blog will, of course, be entered to win a box of your own to try for yourself.  Hope you enjoy like I do.  It’s definitely my cup of tea.

AND THE WINNER IS…(I was supposed to announce the winner on Wednesday but I’ve been spending the past several days being Thankful!)  Lisa Kerns!  Congratulations!

November 22, 2011 - 7:40 am

Tammy Monfiletto - Tammy, I don’t always get a chance to read your blog but when I do, I always get something out of it. I love your real life illustrations along with scripture. What a great “lift me up”. Keep up the great job!

November 22, 2011 - 8:24 am

Sue Sweeney - Tammy, what a great illustration you have used in today’s blog. How true is it that we often treat Christ as a “guest” in our lives when He should be a “resident”. Thank you for bringing this to light in such a great way. You have so much talent, I thank God that you share it with others.

November 22, 2011 - 9:23 am
